Intern: Summer Jones

Before jumping into real projects, we asked our interns a simple question: “What did you expect Sky Story Creative to be like?”
Their answers were fun, honest, and full of curiosity. Here’s a look at their first impressions.
Hello, aanii, wâciye, my name is Summer and I am an artist of mixed Cree heritage, and a proud member of Moose Cree First Nation. I am currently a graphic design student at Cambrian College and one of two new interns at Sky Story Creative. Some of my hobbies include wildlife photography and beading. As a designer, I particularly enjoy visual identity, illustration, and being behind a camera. When I was a child I used to experiment on Photoshop and Vegas Pro for fun, as well as dabbling in some photography (as clear as an 8 year old can take a picture, LOL). In high school, I found out that I could pursue my hobbies as a career through graphic design, and I was hooked. I have to thank my high school graphic design teacher, Christina Thompson, for inspiring me and giving me the motivation to be where I am today.
Coming into this experience, I knew this is where I wanted to be, but I was overwhelmed with many emotions. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I found myself under quite a bit of stress whilst anticipating my placement, assuming the worst and working myself up over the smallest things. This all changed as soon as I entered the office, however. I was greeted with respect and excitement, and I immediately felt at home with everyone. Being mixed, I often struggle with feeling that I don’t know where I belong, but what I do know is that I want to make my mother proud. Reconnecting to my culture has been quite the healing journey. I’m so happy I took the step to reach out to Sky Story Creative and become a part of the team, so I can do what I love most in a safe environment.
Cliff made sure to tell us that it’s okay to be embarrassed sometimes. There is no judgement here. To be embarrassed means to learn, grow, and experience new things. It means getting out of your comfort zone. I’ll make sure to embarrass myself a little more often.
