Intern: Sky Manitowabi
Before jumping into real projects, we asked our interns a simple question: “What did you expect Sky Story Creative to be like?”
Aanii! My name is Sky, and I am very excited to be an intern here at Sky Story Creative.
I am a passionate Graphic Design student attending my final year at Cambrian College, some of my interests are illustration, motion graphics, and visual identity!
As a kid I was very imaginative, was often in my own world until I found a way to express my thoughts through art. My outlets were things like drawing, painting and creating digital art. Which is why Graphic Design was a match made in heaven for me. As a side hobby (and side hustle) I enjoy painting especially on vinyl records and sharing my creative expression on unique canvases. Graphic Design helps me open to a world full of opportunities and new skills to learn as an artist, because design is very much an art.
I come from Wikwemikong First Nations on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. I love my culture, and to honour my elders I am actively learning my language and learning about our teachings through my grandparents. I love my culture; our ways and teachings guide me through the many obstacles of life and I hope to integrate my culture within my work as a graphic designer.
I am an enjoyer of many things such camping, fishing, listening to a variety of music, going to concerts, spending time with friends, playing video games, and of course, designing and creating meaningful visuals!
Expectations vs Reality:
Before we began our placements, I was excited to get into the creative industry but also anxious. I had this built assumption of what a graphic design workplace would look like, little cubicles, harsh fluorescent lights, a lot of employees, strict times, deadlines and long hours. While some of those may be true, Sky Story Creative completely tore that narrative for me. I find society builds this stigma towards the work culture, especially the creative industry. It creates a negative outlook and instead of encouraging new people in the work field, it discourages them to continue to pursue their passions. Sky Creative Story creates a comfortable workspace, which is something I advocate for especially those who deal with some adversities like I do. Having ADHD is my biggest challenge especially when it comes to school or work, I have a hard time getting stuff done efficiently like most do. It feels very isolating when I see incredible hard workers get stuff done fast and perfecting their work when I feel like I’m falling behind. Thankfully, I am getting the resources I need to help me and using new techniques to motivate my mind to strive to be better and a comfortable safe environment is very important!
Chi miigwech to Sky Story Creative and staff for welcoming me into their space! So far, they have helped me learn so many new techniques, gave us great advice and insights about the creative industry. I also gained new profound confidence in my skills as a designer, and I am very secure in my decision to continue to utilize my artistic abilities in my career to help bring change to an ever growing and evolving industry. I am looking forward to many more creative endeavours while I’m here at Sky Story Creative and hope to one day collaborate with them when I’m an independent designer.
Some word of advice from a newbie graphic designer, never let anything kill your passion. Your career should be something your passionate about, something you’d live for, and most of all your workspace should reflect that as well! We are a lucky few workers that can make our dreams and passions into a genuine career.
Keep being creative, be imaginative, be innovative.
Chi Miigwech!
